Volleyball Opens Season With 3-0 Win Over Butler

DEKALB, Ill.ï¿½-- The seventh-ranked Washington volleyball team (1-0) easily defeated Butler (0-2) in its season-opener 3-0 (30-2, 30-20, 30-20) at the NIU Comfort Inn & Suites Invitational this evening. The Huskies controlled the game on both sides of the net, out-scoring the Bulldogs 59 kills to 28 and out-digging Butler 81 to 46.Four Washington players notched kills in double figures, led by senior All-American Sanja Tomasevic with 18. Juniors Brie Hagerty and Darla Myhre added 12 and 11 kills, respectively, and newcomer Christal Morrison logged 10 kills in her collegiate debut.UW out-hit the Bulldogs .349 to .083, led by Hagerty with a .647 hitting percentage (12-1-17). Courtney Thompson paced Washington's offense with 53 assists.Candace Lee anchored the Husky defense with a career-best 34 digs, while Tomasevic recorded 14 digs and Danka Danicic added a career-best 10 digs. Tomasevic also added three blocks on the night, while Egan Metcalf and Myhre each chipped in two.Butler was led by All-American Areal Bienemy with 10 kills and Megan Knightly with 13 digs.Washington returns to tournament action Saturday with two matches on tap. The Huskies will face Wisconsin-Milwaukee at 10 a.m., before rounding out tournament action against host Northern Illinois at 5 p.m.
