No. 10 Cal Volleyball Tops Maryland, 3-0

HOUSTON, TX - The No. 10 ranked Cal women's volleyball team (3-0) continued its strong start to the 2004 season and impressive record in regular-season tournament play, defeating Maryland, 3-0 (30-23, 30-22, 30-24), Saturday at the Houston Tournament. The Golden Bears have now won 17 consecutive tournament matches since the 2002 season. Cal had upended No. 14 Kansas State Friday night in the first round of the tournament.The Bears were playing without standout freshman Angie Pressey, who had 12 kills in only two games Friday against Kansas State before suffering a strained muscle in her lower left leg.'Amanda (Fox) did a great job taking over the hitting duties from an injured Angie Pressey,' said Cal coach Rich Feller. 'Alicia Powers is continuing to play extremely well. We are also blocking well and playing stellar defense. We are getting better each time out.'The Bears will next face host Houston on Sunday, Sept. 5 at 2 p.m. Cal is looking to win its sixth tournament in a row, carrying over from the 2002 and 2003 seasons.
