Volleyball Defeats Ninth-Ranked Pepperdine, 3-1

MALIBU, Calif. - Alicia Robinson led with 19 kills and added a career-high 14 digs, as the top-ranked USC women's volleyball team defeated No. 9 Pepperdine, 3-1 (30-20, 28-30, 30-17, 30-26), on Sunday afternoon in Malibu. With the win, the Women of Troy improve to 4-0 this season and extend their NCAA match win streak to 51.Four Women of Troy finished with double figure kills in the match, including Staci Venski (10), Emily Adams (11) and double-double efforts by Robinson and Keao Burdine (12 kills, 15 digs). Burdine also led with three service aces and libero Debora Seilhamer posted 25 digs.The Women of Troy, just starting to find their rhythm, out-hit Pepperdine .325 to .026 in game one thanks to strong offensive outputs from all five hitters and blockers. The Trojans took game one, 30-20.The Waves refused to be shut-out and fought back in game two. A three-point rally at the start of the game was just enough to keep them in the lead for the remainder of the set. USC never trailed by more than four points and even made a late surge to come within one at 29-28, but a service error gave Pepperdine its final point for a 30-28 win.The Women of Troy rebounded well, winning games three and four for the match victory. Pepperdine's .200 attack percentage in game two was its highest of the afternoon, as USC held the Waves to a .067 and .086 hitting mark in the final two games.Tied at 5-5, a six-point scoring run put the Trojans ahead for good in game three, 11-5. Robinson pounded six of her match-high 19 kills in the game to lead the Women of Troy to a 30-17 win.The final game swung back and forth as the two teams knotted the score 13 times. At 26-26, USC managed to put together the longest run of the game. Kills by Venski and Diane Copenhagen, and a block assist by Bibiana Candelas and Robinson brought the Trojans to match point. A Pepperdine attack error capped off the win for the Women of Troy.The USC-Pepperdine match was part of the Waves three-day Marriott Beach Classic. Adams was named tournament MVP and Candelas was named to the all-tournament team.The Women of Troy travel to Champaign, Ill., this week for the State Farm Illini Volleyball Classic, where they will face American, Miami (Ohio) and Illinois.
