Sept. 6, 2004

QUEENS, N.Y. - No. 21 Washington men's soccer dropped its first match of the season, as second-ranked St. John's used a goal from senior Andre Schmid to defeat the Huskies, 1-0, in front of 1,095 fans at Belson Stadium in Queens, N.Y., Monday evening. The Huskies (2-1-0) and Red Storm (2-0) battled through 79 minutes of scoreless soccer until Schmid's goal in the 80th minute broke the tie. Schmid picked up a deflection in the box and sent a blast from 12 yards that beat Washington goalkeeper Chris Eylander to the lower left. St. John's senior Matt Groenwald had the deflected shot from the top of the 18-yard box and was credited with the assist. The goal was just the first allowed by Eylander this season, as the Husky junior keeper posted two shutouts in Washington's previous wins over Gonzaga (3-0) and Connecticut (1-0) in its opening week of play. Eylander made four saves.Washington senior forward Brett Wiesner had the first shot attempt of the game, a chance that went wide in the fourth minute. Wiesner's shot was one of just five on the night for the Huskies, as the Red Storm controlled play with 13 shots.UW junior midfielder Mike Chabala made a crucial stop in the back in the waning minutes of regulation. A free kick by St. John's from 40 yards out was deflected to the top of the box on the far side, where Red Storm junior Jeff Carroll headed the ball, a shot that was saved by Chabala. The Huskies continues their six-game road swing, next playing at the UNLV FILA Invitational in Las Vegas, Nev., Fri., Sept. 10 and Sunday, Sept. 12.
