Volleyball Sweeps Wichita State

WICHITA, Kan.-- The sixth-ranked Washington volleyball team (4-0) defeated Wichita State in straight sets this evening (30-26, 30-21, 30-22) to open the Green Mill Restaurant Classic. The Huskies out-hit the Shockers .258 to .102, while also holding advantages in kills (49-34) and digs (62-42).

Freshman Christal Morrison led all players with 16 kills, while Brie Hagerty tallied 14 and Sanja Tomasevic added nine. Washington helped itself on serve, picking up nine aces, including four apiece by Tomasevic and Courtney Thompson.

The Huskies and Shockers got off to slow starts in game one with UW holding the .146 to .100 advantage in hitting percentage. Game one saw seven ties thru 13-all before Washington built a six point lead at 28-22. Jessica Veris logged a kill to put the game away at 30-26.

Wichita State took the 7-6 lead in game two before Washington notched eight of the next 10 points to go up 16-10. The Huskies out-hit WSU .316 to .078 in the game to cruise to the 30-21 victory.

Game three was tied thru 18-all before the Huskies rallied to score nine of the next 11 points, including five kills by Tomasevic, to take the 27-20 lead. Washington closed out the match with kills by Morrison and Hagerty and a WSU error to earn its fourth win of the season.

Candace Lee led the Washington defense with 26 digs, while Morrison added nine. Darla Myhre posted six blocks in the victory and Morrison collected four. Thompson dished 44 assists on the night.

The Huskies continue tournament action Friday with a match against Arkansas at 5 p.m.
