Cincinnati Defeats WSU Volleyball 3-1

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- The University of Cincinnati defeated the Washington State volleyball team 22-30, 30-23, 30-24, 30-24, Friday evening at the 2004 LMU Furama Hotel Invitational Tournament at Gersten Pavilion on the Loyola Marymount University campus.

WSU, under the direction of first-year head coach Brian Heffernan, falls to 0-5 on the season while Cincinnati, with its first volleyball win over a Pac-10 school in school history, moves to a record of 5-0.

UC's Maria Pongonis led all players with 23 kills (.372) and had 12 digs. Julie DuPont added 15 kills (.020), four aces and 11 digs. Rachel Torblaa had six of the Bearcats' 17 service aces in addition to her 12 kills. Setter Noel Olson had 49 assists.

Kelly Rosin led WSU with 15 kills (.279) and contributed four blocks. Jennifer Todd added 12 kills and a match-high five blocks. Megan Camp led the team with 13 digs while Stacey Holbrook had 11 digs. Setter Nicole Martin had 35 assists

The opening game saw ten ties but the Cougars out-scored the Bearcats 11 to two for the 30-22 first game win. WSU hit .344 in this game.

After losing the first game for the first time this season, Cincinnati came out firing in game two. The Bearcats took a 21-12 lead and extended it to 29-20. On the first serve at game point, DuPont's attack went astray and on the next serve she missed again. Kristin Kelley landed a kill on the third try before DuPont redeemed herself with the game-winning kill and the final score of 30-23.

Halfway through the third game, the score was tied at 15 when Cincinnati outscored the Cougars 11 to 4 before WSU could lace together two consecutive points. The Bearcats, hitting only .190, kept WSU to a zero hitting percentage and went on to win 30-24.

Cincinnati took a 26-14 lead in the fourth game before WSU put together a late charge, outscoring the Bearcats 8 to one. Ahead 27-22, WSU setter Martin fell into the net and Pongonis followed with a kill to put Cincinnati serving for the game and the match. But the Bearcats' Leslie Newell and Pongonis committed back-to-back attack errors and at the third attempt, Newell landed a kill for the 30-24 Cincinnati win.

WSU plays Miami Saturday morning at 10 a.m. and No. 22 Loyola Marymount Saturday night at 7:30 p.m.
