Sept. 10, 2004

BERKELEY - The No. 9 Golden Bears opened their eigth annual adidas Cal Legacy Classic with a 1-0 victory over San Diego on Friday at Edwards Stadium. California remains undefeated (3-0-0), while San Diego drops their first game of the season, falling to 2-1-0.

San Diego saw the best opportunity of the first half in the 41st minute. Three consecutive shots from inside the 18-yard-box were turned away, two by junior goalkeeper Eric Kronberg and one by senior defender Noah Merl.

Sophomore midfielder Eric Ebert put Cal ahead for good in the 55th minute. Junior forward Calen Carr laid off a ball six-yards out that Ebert easily finished for his first goal of the season. Coming off of a redshirt year, Carr notched his first point of the season on the assist, as well as adding a team-high six shots, three on goal.

Cal looked to add a second goal in the 60th minute, but senior midfielder Mike Munoz saw his 18-yard chip deflect off the cross bar.

The Bears ended the match with 12 shots, eight coming on goal. San Diego managed to get off 13 shots with seven on frame. In a very physical contest, the two team combined for 27 fouls (USD - 17, Cal - 10). Cal keeper Eric Kronberg had 6 saves for his first shutout of the season, while San Diego's Lance Friesz had four.
