UW Women Blank UAB 1-0 in Soccer
Sept. 10, 2004
PORTLAND, Ore. - Junior forward Kim Taylor (Woodland Hills, Calif.) scored the lone goal in the 18th minute Friday, lifting 12th-ranked Washington to a 1-0 victory over UAB in the first round of the Nike Invitational women's soccer tournament at Merlo Field.
Washington (4-0) remained undefeated, playing the first of 10 straight road games. The Blazers (2-2-1) were shut out for the first time this season.
Taylor tallied her second goal of the season at 17:45. She received a pass at the right side of the box and delivered a 10-yard strike inside the near post. Senior Cassie Giles (St. Mary's Academy), who was returning to her hometown of Portland, was credited with an assist on the play.
Taylor netted the game-winning goal in half of the Huskies wins. She scored a golden goal in the ninth overtime minute during UW's 2-1 victory over No. 18 Ohio State on Aug. 29.
Friday's final margin could have been much larger, but UAB goalkeeper Katie Forbis registered 14 saves. The Huskies attempted 19 shots to only seven for the Blazers.
UAB had one final opportunity to tie the game with 28 seconds remaining, but Jenny Rynders' shot from the top of the box sailed high.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kelsey Rasmussen (Gig Harbor, Wash./Bellarmine Prep) posted her first shutout of the season and the fourth of her career. Rasmussen saved four shots.
The Huskies play Weber State, Sunday at noon in the final round of the Nike Invitational. Weber and host Portland played a late first-round game Friday.
