No. 18 Husky Men Shut Down UNLV 3-0

LAS VEGAS, NEV. - Junior midfielder Mike Chabala scored one goal and assisted another, leading No. 18 Washington men's soccer to a 3-0 victory over host UNLV in its opening match of the UNLV FILA Invitational in Las Vegas, Nev., Friday evening. It was the third shutout of the year for the Huskies, who have allowed just one goal in four games this season.

Chabala put the Huskies (3-1-0) on the board first in the 38th minute, scoring on a penalty kick. It was the first collegiate goal for the Husky central midfielder, having already tallied six assists in his career.

Clinging to a 1-0 lead at halftime, the Huskies wasted no time getting a second goal after the intermission, as sophomore forward Kevin Forrest scored on a header from a throw-in by Chabala, just one minute and four seconds into the second frame.

Washington sealed the win on senior forward Casey Armstrong's second goal of the season in the 67th minute, off an assist from freshman forward Ely Allen.

The Huskies outshot UNLV (1-2-0) 15-8, and finished with a 5-2 advantage on corner kicks. UW junior goalkeeper Chris Eylander made three saves to record his third shutout of the season.

Washington will next play No. 13 Creighton on Sunday, Sept. 12, at 2:30 p.m. Creighton upset UCLA in the first game of the tournament, 3-2. UCLA and UNLV will face off at noon on Sunday.
