Cal Shuts Out San Jose State, 2-0

BERKELEY - No. 9 California shutout San Jose State 2-0 to tie for first place in their eighth annual adidas Cal Legacy Classic. Stanford, who also finished the tournament at 2-0, shares first place with the Golden Bears, followed by San Diego in third and San Jose State in fourth.

Junior forward Pieter Berger knocked in the game-winner for Cal, ensuring the tournament title, in the 38th minute. Midfielder Angel Quintero found Berger open in the box, who buried the Bear's first score from 16-yards-out.

Senior forward and preseason second team All American Carl Acosta tallied the Bears' second goal of the match at the 67:30 mark. Junior midfielder Nick Hatzke (2 goals, 3 assists) sent in a cross from the right side which Acosta trapped and slotted home for his second goal of the season.

Cal thoroughly dominated play, creating numerous offensive opportunities en route to out-shooting SJSU 24-3. The Spartan's senior goalkeeper Daniel Benson had 9 saves, which Cal's junior goalie Eric Kronberg recorded two saves for his second shutout of the tournament. The Bears' have outscored their four regular season opponents 9-1.

In earlier tournament action, Stanford knocked off San Diego, 2-0, to earn a share of the tournament title. Stanford received goals from seniors Darren Fernandez and Todd Leber.

Along with sharing the tournament title, the Bears and the Cardinal also had tournament co-MVP's. Cal's senior defender Noah Merl and Stanford's sophomore goalkeeper Andrew Kartunen shared the MVP honor.
