No. 14 Cal Shuts Out Penn, 2-0
Sept. 17, 2004
BERKELEY, Calif. - No. 14 California blanked Pennsylvania, 2-0, for its fifth shutout of the season Friday afternoon at Edwards Stadium. The Golden Bears improved to 5-1-1, while the Quakers dropped to 1-4.
'This is a good team,' said Cal head coach Kevin Boyd. 'They're a lot better than people think. We played them two years ago (won 4-2) when they were all freshmen and sophomores. They're the same team now. So, that tells you how much better they were from even two years ago. The first half we dominated and showed that we're the better team. I think that they'd admit that, as well. The second half they came out battling and did quite well and made it tougher for us.'
Midfielder Lindsay Clute propelled Cal to a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute when she rifled a shot into the goal from about 12 yards. The play developed when forward Liz Eisenberg's long cross deflected off one of the Penn defenders to Clute who tallied her second goal of 2004.
Forward Dania Cabello was the recipient of another Eisenberg assist 21 minutes into the game. Midfielder Sierra Schlesinger lofted a cross into the box to Eisenberg who alluded the goalkeeper and sent a rolling shot towards goal. Cabello knocked the ball in for her third goal of the year to assure that the Bears would grab a 2-0 lead.
'Our front line has been doing great all year,' said Boyd. 'Lindsay getting that goal is nice for her. Gidget (Eisenberg) had a terrific game today. Her activity, her energy, her effort was quite good.'
Eisenberg leads the Bears with 12 points this season, from five goals and two assists. The San Rafael product scored a hat trick last Sunday in Cal's 5-1 win over San Jose State.
Penn played with much more energy after halftime, but the Bears still managed to outshoot the Quakers, 6-4, in the second half and 13-5 overall for the game. Cal goalkeeper Ashley Sulprizio didn't need to make any saves. Jessica Keeley allowed both Cal goals in the first half, while making three saves. Her replacement, Anna Halse, kept the Bears in check, but had to make three big saves in the second half, including a diving save on a hard shot from Cabello.
Cal returns to action next Friday, Sept. 24 against Fresno State at 4 p.m. at Edwards Stadium.
