Syracuse Bests Cougar Volleyball 3-1
Sept. 18, 2004
DENVER, Colo. -- Syracuse University, coming off its first loss of the season, defeated the Washington State volleyball team 30-27, 30-19, 16-30, 30-15 Saturday afternoon at the University of Denver Invitational tournament.
Syracuse is now 10-1 on the season while the Cougars, under the direction of first-year Head Coach Brian Heffernan, fall to 3-7.
Morgan Jones, Jen Malcom and Kelly Duan combined for 35 of the Orange's 59 kills. Malcom's 13 blocks led the match as the Orange out-blocked the Cougars 18 to 10. Both Aila Dommestrup and Kristen Conway had three service aces while Jocie Kaup contributed 19 digs.
Kelly Rosin's 22 kills led WSU. Jen Todd added five blocks with both Rosin and Jen Barcus contributing four blocks each. Stacey Holbrook had a match-high 26 digs. After hitting a season-high .364 in its Friday win over Radford, WSU could only manage a .130 in this match.
After maintaining a comfortable four-point lead through most of the first game, WSU had a meltdown and allowed the Orange to score seven uncontested points to go ahead 28-26. A service error by SU's Kelly Duan gave WSU its final score as Duan's tip and a kill by Kristen Conway gave Syracuse the 30-27 win. Rosin had six kills in this game but SU's Malcom had five blocks.
Syracuse jumped out to an early lead and did not look back. SU scored the final four points for the 30-19 win as the Cougs couldn't find the offensive handle. Malcom added six blocks as the Orange hit .318 and held WSU to under .100 hitting for the second consecutive game.
WSU found a way around the big Syracuse block in the third game, hitting .419 and holding SU to .032. The Cougars' Rosin had six kills and Todd had four as WSU got back into the match with a 30-19 game win.
The Orange had a nine-point run to take the lead in the fourth game and never looked back. Once again the Orange held WSU to below .100 hitting in the 30-15 SU win.
WSU takes on host University of Denver Saturday night.
