Beavers Come From Behind To Upset No. 23 San Diego

Sept. 18, 2004

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Karah Rhoades had 14 kills and 12 digs to lead the Oregon State volleyball team to a 3-2 come-from-behind win over No. 23 San Diego on Saturday night. OSU lost the first two games but won the final three to walk away with the 19-30, 27-30, 30-28, 31-29, 15-11 victory over the Toreros.

Rhoades was named the Most Valuable Player of the USD Invitational, which the Beavers won after finishing the tournament 3-0.

The win over USD was Oregon State's first five-game win in three tries this season, and it came against the first ranked opponent the Beavers have played. OSU improves to 6-3, while the Toreros dropped to 5-3 and ended a streak of four consecutive 3-0 victories.

'What a crazy match. What a complete turnaround. They absolutely dominated us in game one. We couldn't touch their hitters,' coach Nancy Somera said. 'We finally settled in and started competing, and our block and our floor defense put some pressure on them. We hung in there, and I told the team to just always keep trying to find a way to get it done.'

OSU's Allison Lawrence and Amanda Eggert also earned All-Tournament Team honors, as did Nevada's Salaia Salave'a and San Diego's Devon Forster, Lindsey Sherburne and Emily Haas.

Rhoades led the Beavers with 14 kills against USD, and Katelyn Healy had a season-high 13 - one shy of tying her career-high. Abby Windell added 11 kills, including OSU's final two points of the night.

The Beavers hit .562 with 13 kills and no errors in the decisive fifth game, a big improvement over their .030 mark in the first game. They hit .193 for the match. USD hit .207, but committed 29 hitting errors in the third and fourth games to allow the Beavers the comeback opportunity.

Desma Stovall, who hit .364 with five kills and 40 assists, led the defensive effort with a team-best 13 digs. Rhoades turned in 12, and Nina Baltimore contributed 11 digs.

Oregon State begins Pacific-10 action next week, when the Beavers travel to Eugene to face Oregon on Friday, September 24.
