No. 14 Cal Volleyball Defeats UC Irvine, 3-0

HONOLULU, HI - Behind freshman Angie Pressey's 18 kills, the No. 14-ranked California women's volleyball team (5-3) defeated UC Irvine (7-2) 30-24, 30-23 and 30-27 to earn a second-place finish in the Waikiki Beach Marriott Volleyball Invitational Sunday at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu. On Friday, Cal had lost to host Hawaii, 3-0. The Golden Bears' victory over the Anteaters broke a three-match losing streak.
Pressey led the way for Cal, putting up a career-high 18 kills while hitting .353. Junior Alicia Powers hit .500 with 11 kills and four blocks, while senior middle hitter Camille Leffall had nine kills and hit .500. Sophomore setter Samantha Carter had an outstanding match as well with 47 assists, five kills, six digs and three blocks. Pressey and Leffall were selected to the all-tournament team.
Whitney Pavlik led the way for UC Irvine with 14 kills and a .333 hitting percentage, while Amanda Vasquez had eight kills and three blocks.
The Bears will next begin Pac-10 competition when they host Arizona State on Thursday, Sept. 23 at 7 p.m. at Haas Pavilion. Cal then faces No. 15-ranked Arizona on Friday, Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. at Haas Pavilion.
