No. 3 Cal in 12th After First Round of Fall Preview

SUNRIVER, Ore. - No. 3 California is in 12th place after the opening round of the Mercedez-Benz of Bend Fall Preview Monday at the Meadows Golf Course. The Golden Bears opened the 2004-05 season with a round of plus-14 298. No. 1 Duke leads the 21-team field at minus-one 283, followed by Washington (285) and Georgia (286).

Duke's Brittany Lang holds a three-stroke lead after posting a minus-seven 64. Oklahoma State's Karin Sjodin, who was runner-up to Cal's Sarah Huarte at the 2004 NCAA Championships, is tied for second with Ohio State's Kristen White at 67.

Senior Claire Dury and junior Sofie Andersson are tied for 22nd with scores of two-over 73 in the first round. Andersson utilized a team-high five birdies to compensate for seven bogies sprinkled throughout the 18 holes, while Dury sank four birdies - two each on the front and back nines.

Freshman Jen Sanders had an impressive Golden Bear debut, posting a three-over 74, including a solid back nine with seven pars, one birdie and one bogie, to grab a share of 33rd place.

Also for Cal, junior Sophia Sheridan is tied for 78th (78), and sophomore Danielle Nash is tied for 90th (80).

The second of three rounds tees off Tuesday at 8 a.m. PT, barring another frost delay as was experienced today.
