Stanford Ranked #2 In Pre-Season Poll

Stanford, Ca - The Stanford men's cross country team, the two-time defending NCAA champions, is ranked second in the nation in the pre-season Mondo Men's Cross Country Poll, conducted by the United States Cross Country Coaches Association.

The Cardinal generated four of the 14 first place votes for a total of 403 points. Wisconsin gathered 414 points (nine first place votes) to gain the #1 national ranking. Iona, Arkansas, Colorado, Michigan, Georgetown, North Carolina State, BYU and Cal Poly round out the top ten.

Stanford is one of five Pac-10 teams ranked in the top 30. Arizona is ranked 17th, followed by Oregon (21st), Washington (25th) and Arizona State (30th).

The Cardinal graduated five of its top six runners that finished in the top 15 as Stanford easily won the national title in 2003. The Cardinal chalked up 24 points, 150 points better than runnerup Wisconsin. The margin of victory was the largest in NCAA Division I history.

This year, Ryan Hall will lead a young and talented Stanford contingent. Hall led Stanford to victory at the NCAA Championships last year with a second place finish to gain All-America honors for a second straight year. Hall also finished second at the NCAA West Regional and for his efforts gained Pacific-10 Conference Athlete of the Year honors. Other veteran names to look out for include Chris Emme, who finished in the top seven at the Pac-10 and NCAA West Regional Championships in 2003, Neil Davis, a top 10 finisher at the 2002 and 2003 NCAA West Regional Championships, and Peter Meindl, who competed for Stanford at the 2002 NCAA's,

Stanford will host the 31st annual Stanford Invitational on Sept. 25.
