In the Trenches with Khalif Barnes

Sept. 27, 2004

With only two sacks allowed this year, Washington's offensive line has been among the best in the Pac-10. Leading the line is senior co-captain Khalif Barnes, a four-year starter at offensive tackle who has yet to miss a game in his collegiate career. Just four years removed from a trip to the Rose Bowl as a reserve lineman, Barnes tries daily to instill in a young Husky team the passion and dedication necessary to return to Pasadena once again. reporter Jesse Hulsing met with Barnes on Monday to discuss the Huskies' goals for the remainder of the 2004 season. What did you think of the tradition of Notre Dame? Were you impressed with the overall atmosphere?
Khalif Barnes: 'It was cool. They have a nice tradition, similar to the one we have.'

GH: How did you think your offensive line did against the Irish?
Barnes: 'We pass-protected pretty well, but we didn't run as well as I would have liked. We had a tough time blocking them.'

GH: What do you need to improve on this week to prepare for Stanford?
Barnes: 'We have to play better as a team.'

GH: How does the quarterback situation effect you? Do you have to play different for different QBs?
Barnes: 'We just have to protect whoever steps up and plays.'

GH: What do you think of Stanford?
Barnes: 'I haven't watched the film on them yet -- we'll do that today. I've heard they had a good game against USC, so they must be playing well. It's a Pac-10 game, so it's important.'

GH: Are you anxious to turn this season around?
Barnes: 'Yeah, the first few games have been a little rough, but even the greatest teams have struggled. We have eight games left -- we could still go on a run, but we have to get a win first.'

GH: After two games on the road are you looking forward to coming back and playing San Jose State at home?
Barnes: 'I always like playing at home, but I like playing on the road, too. I'm just looking for our first win.'

GH: Are you looking forward to school starting?
Barnes: 'Yeah, I'm almost done.'

GH: Thanks for your time Khalif and good luck this weekend.
Barnes: 'No problem.'
