2005 UW Baseball Recruiting Class Ranked No. 34

Sept. 30, 2004

SEATTLE - The Washington baseball team's class of newcomers for the 2005 season has been ranked as the No. 34 class in the nation in Collegiate Baseball newspaper's annual ranking of recruiting classes.

The group of new Huskies currently includes 18 players -- 14 freshmen, three junior college transfers and one four-year college transfer. Of the 18 newcomers, 17 played their high school ball in the state of Washington while the other, senior transfer Mike Rundle from Bend, Ore., played last season at Gonzaga.

The UW's ranking at No. 34 placed the Huskies fifth among Pac-10 programs. Arizona State's class was ranked No. 2 in the nation (behind No. 1 Louisiana State) while Arizona ranked No. 6, Stanford was No. 11 and USC was tabbed as having the No. 20 group. UCLA, California and Oregon State's classes were each listed among those receiving consideration.

Two members of the new UW class were selected in the Major League Baseball draft last June. Outfielder Michael Burgher (Shoreline/Shorecrest HS) was drafted by the Dodgers in the 36th round while left-handed pitcher Nick Hagadone (Sumner/Sumner HS) was taken only five picks later in the same round by the Mariners.

Another two new Huskies are younger brothers of current players. Freshman Kiel Lillibridge's older brother, Brent, is a two-time All-Pac-10 first-teamer and freshman Andy Lentz's older brother Richie is a UW sophomore pitcher.
