UCLA Senior Ryan Walcott To Transfer To Grand Canyon University

Sept. 30, 2004

UCLA senior guard Ryan Walcott has announced his intention to transfer to Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, AZ, Bruin head coach Ben Howland announced Thursday.

Walcott, a 6-1 guard who attended Shadow Mountain HS in Phoenix, is eligible to compete for the Antelopes this season (Grand Canyon is an NCAA Div. II institution). But according to Walcott, he will be a part-time student at Grand Canyon this year and will then compete for the Antelopes in 2005-06 as a senior.

Walcott, who has appeared in 80 UCLA games (nine starts) from 2002-04, has Bruin career averages of 13.5 minutes, 2.5 points and 1.8 assists. After redshirting in 2000-01, Walcott appeared in 28 games as a redshirt freshman (2001-02/10.4 minutes a game), 27 contests (nine starts) as a sophomore (2002-03/21.5 minutes a game) and 25 games last season as a junior (2003-04/8.3 minutes a game).

'I had a great time at UCLA, this is nothing against the Bruin program,' Walcott said. 'It's just better for me to be at home. It will be nice to be playing in front of my family here in Phoenix. I wish UCLA and my teammates the best for the coming season.'

'I appreciate Ryan's hard work, effort and contributions during his years as a Bruin, ' Howland said. 'Our staff and his teammates wish Ryan well in his future endeavors both on and off the court. Ryan now wants to return home and play at Grand Canyon, where I know he feels he can be a major contributor. We wish him the best.'
