Oct. 1, 2004
BERKELEY, CA - The No. 19-ranked California men's golf team will be competing at the ninth annual Windon Memorial Classic, Oct. 4-5, at Conway Farms Golf Club in Lake Forest, Ill. The Windon Memorial Classic is a 54-hole tournament, with 36 holes played on Monday (Oct. 4) and 18 holes on Tuesday (Oct. 5). Last season, Cal placed second behind Minnesota (859, -5) at the tournament, shooting 868 (+4) for the three rounds.
The Golden Bears, the defending 2004 NCAA champions, are one of the classic's 18 entrants. Also included in the field are Oklahoma, Toledo, Kent State and Purdue - four teams that joined Cal at the 2004 NCAA championships. Another nine teams - Minnesota, Duke, LSU, North Carolina State, Notre Dame, Stanford, Kansas, Furman and Illinois - earned NCAA regional berths in 2004. The other entrants include host Northwestern, North Florida, UC Davis and Richmond. Along with Minnesota (Windon champion in 1994, '98 and 2003), Kent State (1993 and '99), Oklahoma (2000) and Northwestern (2002) have all won Windon titles.
Seven golfers who earned All-America honors in 2004 are entered in the tournament, including the Bears' Hood, an honorable mention All-America pick last season. Also competing will be Oklahoma's 2004 NCAA Freshman of the Year, Anthony Kim, and Purdue's Peter Richardson, the defending Windon individual champion from 2003. Bear returnees who played in the tournament last season include sophomore Brandon Beck, who shot 77-73-72 (222, +6) to place tied for 23rd, and senior Jeff Hood, who shot 76-78-70 (224, +8) to place tied for 36th.
Opened in 1991, Conway Farms is a Tom Fazio-designed course and it was named one of the best new private courses in the nation by Golf Digest. The 6,733-yard, par 71 layout is played on an open prairie and offers links-style golf. Conway Farms served as the host course for the 1996 Ping/GolfWeek Preview, the 1997 NCAA Men's Golf Championship, the 1998 USGA Junior Amateur and the 1999 Windon Memorial.
The 2004-05 Cal men's golf team will be led by Hood, who placed 10th individually with Bear teammate Peter Tomasulo at the 2004 NCAA championships. Cal is coached by Steve Desimone, Golfweek's 2003-04 College Coach of the Year, who is in his 26th season directing the Bears' men's golf program.
In Cal's first competition of the fall, the Bears finished tied for 12th with Pac-10 rivals Arizona and UCLA at the Ping/Golfweek Preview, Sept. 26-27 at the Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Md. Cal shot rounds of 305, 294 and 285 for a total of 884. Hood was Cal's top performer with rounds of 73, 72 and 70 to finish tied for 16th at 215. Freshman Michael Jensen finished tied for 36th with rounds of 74, 77 and 70 for a 221.
