UCLA Women Earn No. 25 Pre-Season Ranking From Street & Smith's

Oct. 1, 2004

Street & Smith's Magazine has ranked the UCLA women's basketball team No. 25 in its pre-season poll and bestowed pre-season All-America honors upon Bruin guards Noelle Quinn and Nikki Blue.

The Bruins (17-13 last season with a trip to the NCAA Tournament), were ranked No. 22 by Lindy's Magazine. They will face four other Street & Smith's Top 25 teams this season, including three Top 15 teams at home - No. 3 Texas on Nov. 27, No. 7 Stanford on Feb. 20 and No. 14 Purdue on Dec. 5. Also on UCLA's schedule is No. 19 Ohio State (at Columbus on Dec. 21).

'We have a great group returning,' said UCLA head coach Kathy Olivier. 'Our perimeter players can play with anyone in the country. If we stay healthy and continue to improve our inside game, we can be very dangerous by the end of the year.'

In addition to the team rankings, Street & Smith's also chose Quinn and Blue for its pre-season All-America team. Quinn, a sophomore from Los Angeles, CA, was named to the High Honorable Mention team. The Pac-10 Freshman of the Year last season, Quinn led the Bruins in both scoring (15.9 ppg) and rebounding (7.7 rpg). Blue, a junior from Bakersfield, CA, earned first-team All-Pac-10 honors for the second consecutive year last season and averaged 15.2 points, 5.6 rebounds, 4.9 assists and 3.0 steals per game. Both players are on the Watch List for the Wooden All-America squad and the Wade Trophy.

UCLA kicks off the season on Nov. 7 with an exhibition game against Love and Basketball at 2 pm. The first regular season game is at the Miami Jam vs. Texas Christian on Nov. 19.
