Beavers Fifth, Younce 11th At Willamette Invitational

Oct. 2, 2004

SALEM, Ore. - Oregon State placed fifth among the 18 teams in its race at the Willamette Invitational women's cross country meet and the Beavers' Ashley Younce was 11th in the 180-runner field Saturday morning at Bush's Pasture Park. Idaho won the 5,000-meter race for women from NCAA Division I schools, junior colleges, clubs and unattached competitors, with the Vandals' Mary Kamau winning the individual title in 17 minutes, 6.15 seconds.

The Willamette Invitational is one of the top regular-season meets on the West Coast; Idaho is ranked 25th nationally and Washington received votes in the latest national poll. The event included a separate race for runners from Division II, Division III and NAIA schools.

'Overall, it was a pretty good day,' OSU head coach Kelly Sullivan said. 'We were pleased. We were very happy with it and we got out of this meet exactly what we wanted - running against a big field in a big competition, and we survived.'

Younce finished in 17:20.57, just .42 of a second behind 10th-place Kim Conley of California-Davis. Other top finishers for OSU were Neoma Palmer, 21st in 17:47.67; and Kaitlin Poggi, 33rd in 18:11.37.

'Ashley's finish was pretty darn good. Her time was over a one-minute personal best from what she ran in high school,' Sullivan said of Younce, who is in her third year at OSU but hadn't competed from her prep days until this fall. 'And Neoma ran well, and she'd been off a little this week.'

Oregon State will next race on Oct. 16, with some of the Beavers going to the Eastern Washington Invitational in Cheney, Wash., and others competing in the Jim Danner Invitational in Troutdale.
