Cal Nike Invitational Day Two Results

BERKELEY - Day Two action of the Cal Nike Invitational saw California's Suzi Babos advance to the singles main draw final to be played tomorrow at 10 a.m. The Invitational pits the Golden Bears against Arizona, Arizona State, UC Davis, Sacramento State, Texas and Washington State.

Babos defeated teammate Monica Wiesner in the quarterfinals, 6-4; 6-0, then came back from dropping the first set to beat Texas' Mia Marovic, 2-6; 6-4; 6-2, to advance to the finals. Cal junior Jessica Shu and sophomore Sasha Podkolzina both advanced to the finals in their singles consolation brackets. Shu defeated freshman teammate Tiffany Lee, 6-3; 7-5 to advance to the finals. Podkolzina, No. 30 in the nation, knocked off Arizona's Camelia Todorova, 6-3; 6-1, to move into the finals.

Podkolzina and Babos also triumphed in doubles, where the duo defeated Arizona State's Vana Tomas and Texas' Kelly Baritot to advance into tomorrow's semifinals. In doubles consolations, Wiesner and Lee as well as Cristina Visico and Shu won their matches.

In the singles consolation round robin, Visico defeated Washington State's Amy Toth in three sets, 3-6; 6-1; 7-5. Freshman Hilary Englert also came out on top, beating UC Davis' Ashley Lehman in straight sets, 6-2; 6-0.

Action concludes tomorrow at Berkeley's Hellman Tennis Center from 9 a.m. through 5 p.m. Doubles semifinals for the main draw and back draw will begin at 9 a.m. Finals for singles, both main draw and back draw, are at 10 a.m. Finals for doubles will follow. Admission is free.
