No. 7 Cal Falls to No. 16 Santa Clara, 3-1

Oct. 7, 2004

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - No. 7 California (Soccer Buzz) was upset by No. 16 Santa Clara (Soccer Buzz), 3-1, Wednesday night at Buck Shaw Stadium. The Golden Bears fell to 7-2-1 and saw their seven-game unbeaten streak snapped, while the Broncos improved to 7-3-2.

'Eventually you have to beat (ranked) teams when you get into the playoffs,' said Cal head coach Kevin Boyd, whose Bears hadn't played a game since beating Pacific, 5-0, Sept. 26. 'We have to play teams like that, find out where we are. It helps us to keep moving forward. That's important to have to do that. At the same time, it's a mentality. We can take a certain mentality into games with those other teams and absolutely crush them. We need to take that mentality into these games and still try to beat them. I didn't feel like we did that.'

Santa Clara scored its first goal on a penalty kick in the seventh minute by Leslie Osborne. The penalty kick was awarded when a Cal defender took Bree Horvath down in the box.

The Broncos tallied their final two goals in the run of play within one minute, eight seconds of each other. The first came from Lauren Zealer at 64:14, and the third was a 20-foot shot off the foot of Marian Dalmy.

Cal made several substitutions later in the half, including inserting Katie Ratican and Stephanie Wieger on the frontline. The fresh legs paid off in the 81st minute when Ratican sent a cross from the left side to Wieger, who tapped the ball in from just inside the six-yard box. The goal was Wieger's fifth of her freshman campaign.

Santa Clara held a 13-4 edge in shots. Liz Eisenberg led the Bears with two shots, including a header off the cross bar in the 70th minute. Ratican forced Broncos' goalkeeper Julie Ryder to make a save with just over 12 minutes to play.

Cal goalkeeper Ashley Sulprizio made five saves. Tracy Hamm was credited with one of Cal's two team saves when she came up big in the first half on a SCU opportunity.

The Bears begin Pac-10 play at home against No. 8 Stanford Sunday at 1 p.m. at Edward Stadium.
