Stanford Story: The Cardinal opens Pac-10 play this Sunday against California in Berkeley ... Stanford has started the year with an 8-2-1 mark ... senior co-captain Marcie Ward leads the team with 13 points on six goals and one assist, while freshman Lizzy George is trailing with nine points on four goals and one assist ... senior co-captain Nicole Barnhart is ranked No. 9 in the nation with a 0.37 goals-against average, after giving up only four goals in the first 11 games.
Cardinal vs. Golden Bears: Sunday's match-up will be the Pac-10 opener for both teams ... earlier this season, conference coaches predicted that Stanford would finish second in the Pac-10 and California would take sixth place ... Stanford leads the all-time series against the Bears, 12-8-2 ... last season, the Cardinal posted a 2-1 overtime victory over the Bears in the Pac-10 finale.
California Chronicle: California is 7-2-1 on the season, after dropping a 3-1 decision to Santa Clara on Wednesday night ... the Bears' only other loss this season was a 4-2 loss to North Carolina on Aug. 29 ... Liz Eisenberg leads the Cal offense in points (18) and goals (8), while Stephanie Wieger has contributed 13 points on four goals and 5 assists.
Gauntlet Gossip: The Cal/Stanford Gauntlet competition, sponsored by Lexus, is in full swing for the 2004-05 season ... the Cardinal-Golden Bears match-up this Sunday is worth 5 points for the winner ... the school which accumulates the most points through out the season will be awarded with The Gauntlet Trophy ... with three contests final, the race is tied at 5-5 (Stanford Women's Volleyball - W, 3-2; Stanford Men's Soccer - T, 2-2 (2ot); Cal Field Hockey - W, 2-1 (ot)).

Rankings Report: With seven wins in the last eight games, the Cardinal retained its No. 16 spot in the NSCAA/adidas poll ... with a 0-0 tie at Santa Clara and a 2-1 victory over Saint Mary's, the Cardinal is ranked No. 12 in Soccer Times, No. 10 in Soccer America and No. 8 in Soccer Buzz.

Tapscott Trivia: Junior midfielder Leah Tapscott was named Pac-10 Player of the Week on Oct. 4 after helping the Cardinal to a 0-0 tie at Santa Clara and a 2-1 victory over Saint Mary's ... Tapscott scored the game-winner against the Gaels ... the weekly conference honor is the first in her career and the first of the season for Stanford.
Barnhart Bullets: Senior goalie Nicole Barnhart has been named to the Soccer America and College Sports Television (CSTV) Preseason All-America teams, as well as the MAC Hermann Trophy Preseason Watch List ... the two-time All-American is co-captain of the Cardinal for the second-straight season ... she is one shutout away from moving up to No. 2 in the school record books for career shutouts ... with five blankings to her credit this season, Barnhart has recorded 34 in her career.
