Oct. 8, 2004

BERKELEY, CA - The University of California men's golf team will try to repeat as tournament champions when the Golden Bears host the third-annual Alister MacKenzie Invitational this Monday and Tuesday, Oct 11-12, at The Meadow Club in Fairfax, Calif. The Alister MacKenzie Invitational is a 54-hole tournament, with 36 holes played on Monday and 18 holes on Tuesday. The Meadow Club course, founded in 1927, measures 6,585 yards and is a par-71.

Tee times start at 7:25 a.m. on Monday and 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday. A practice round will be held Sunday.

The field for this year's event includes some of the nation's best collegiate golf teams. The Bears, defending 2004 NCAA champions, will send a team out that finished tied for 12th at the Ping/Golfweek Preview Sept. 26-27, and 13th at the Windon Memorial Classic, Oct. 4-5. Joining Cal at this 15-team event will be Pac-10 rivals Stanford, Washington, Oregon State and Oregon - plus Purdue, Kansas State, Illinois, Northwestern, San Francisco, Cal Poly, Pacific, San Jose State, Long Beach State and Nevada.

Cal, ranked 19th in Golf World's College Preseason Coaches' Poll, captured last year's Alister MacKenzie Invitational with a miraculous comeback. The Bears headed into the final round 14 strokes behind day one leader Northwestern. After its final round of 273 (-11), Cal finished with a score of 833 (-19), two shots ahead of the Wildcats' 835 (-17). UCLA's Steve Conway was last year's individual champion with a 200 (67, 65, 68, -13), six strokes ahead of the Bears' Scott Carlyle (67, 72, 67, -7), Illinois' Joe Affrunti (68, 68, 70, -7) and Northwestern's Bryson Young (69, 67, 70, -7) with 206. The inaugural Alister MacKenzie champion was Fresno State in 2002.

The 2004-05 Cal men's golf team will be led by senior Jeff Hood, who placed 10th individually with Bear teammate Peter Tomasulo at the 2004 NCAA championships. Cal is coached by Steve Desimone, Golfweek's 2003-04 College Coach of the Year, who is in his 26th season directing the Bears' men's golf program.

In Cal's first competition of the fall, the Bears finished tied for 12th with Pac-10 rivals Arizona and UCLA at the Ping/Golfweek Preview, played at the Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Md. Cal shot rounds of 305, 294 and 285 for a total of 884. Hood was Cal's top performer with rounds of 73, 72 and 70 to finish tied for 16th at 215.
