BERKELEY, Calif. - Junior goalkeeper Ashley Sulprizio scored a goal and secured seven saves to help No. 7 California tie No. 8 Stanford, 1-1, in double overtime in both team's Pac-10 opener Sunday at Edwards Stadium.

'What a credit to our team to give up a goal with nine minutes left and to come back and score with under three minutes to play,' said Cal head coach Kevin Boyd. 'I think that's huge. It was a good game. The stats show that it was a very even game. Every time we play Stanford, it seems like we go to overtime. It was fun. We gave the audience a heck of a game.'

With Cal down 1-0, a huge crowd was treated to a rear goalkeeper goal in the 88th minute. The Golden Bears (7-2-2, 0-0-1) earned their fourth corner kick of the game, and Boyd directed the 6-1 Sulprizio to rush down field into the box. Cal defender Tracy Hamm stayed near the midfield line on the corner kick. Freshman midfielder Chioma Igwe lofted a perfect service to the center of the goal, and Sulprizio headed the ball into the net for the equalizer.

'We got a corner and needed a goal,' said Boyd. 'I was going to stick our six-foot-one girl in the box and see what happens.'

'It was so random, ' said Sulprizio. 'I've always wanted to score. If I was going to pick a game, this would be it.'

Stanford scored first in the 81st minute on a set piece, as well. Amy Grady directed a long free kick deep into the box, and Leah Tapscott looped a header past Sulprizio for her fourth goal of the season.

Cal held an 11-10 shot advantage in regulation, but Stanford grabbed a 6-2 shot edge in overtime. Cal held a 4-2 corner kick advantage for the game. The Bears had several opportunities to go ahead earlier in the game, including a first half blast from Liz Eisenberg, which Stanford goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart barely punched over the cross bar. Midfielder Lindsey Clute posted quality shots on goal in the 77th and 80th minutes.

Sulrprizio's seven saves were one shy of her career high. Barnhart also made seven saves for Stanford.

Next weekend, the Bears host Arizona State Oct. 15 at 1 p.m., and Arizona Oct. 17 at 1 p.m.
