Stanford and Cal Battle to 1-1 Tie in Berkeley
Oct. 10, 2004
Berkeley, Calif. - It came down to the goalies today on the UC Berkeley campus, as Stanford and California battled to a 1-1 double overtime tie at Edwards Stadium in both team's Pac-10 opener. Cardinal keeper Nicole Barnhart (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) and Bears' goalie Ashley Suprizio both picked up seven saves, but with 2:30 remaining in regulation, Suprizio scored to tie the match and send the contest into overtime.
Stanford (8-2-2, 0-0-1 Pac-10) took a 1-0 lead in the 81st minute when junior Leah Tapscott (Madison, Wis./James Madison Memorial) converted a free kick by senior Amy Grady (Pawcatuck, Conn./Loomis Chaffee School), but then the already intense match became even more intense.
With less than three minutes to go and trailing by a goal, Cal moved the 6-foot-1 Suprizio into the box on a corner kick and the keeper headed the ball into the net for her first collegiate goal. In overtime, Stanford out-shot the Bears, 6-2, but neither team could convert in the extra 20 minutes, and the squads finished in a 1-1 tie.
Stanford will host Arizona and Arizona State next weekend, with the Wildcats coming to Maloney Field at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and the Sun Devils visiting The Farm at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday.
