Husky Golfers Travel to Cal for Mackenzie Invitational

Seattle -- The Washington men's golf team hits the road this week to compete at California's Alister Mackenzie Invitational Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 11-12. The 54-hole tournament will be played at the par-72, 6,585-yard, Meadow Club, founded in 1927. The tournament features 36 holes of play Monday and 18 holes on Tuesday.

The Huskies are ranked 19th in the Oct. 7 Precept Coaches Poll and figure 22nd in the Oct. 7 Golfweek ratings.

The 15-team field for this year's Mackenzie Invitational includes (Golfweek ranking) California, Cal Poly, Illinois, Kansas State, Long Beach State, Nevada, Northwestern, Oregon, Oregon State, Pacific, Purdue (20th), San Francisco, San Jose State, Stanford and Washington (22nd).

California rallied from a 14-stroke deficit last year to win their own tournament by two strokes over Arizona. UCLA's Steve Conway was the medalist with a score of 13-under 2000. Fresno State won the inaugural championship in 2002.

Washington's lineup for the Mackenzie Invitational will include junior James Lepp, sophomores Alex Prugh and Erik Olson and freshmen Zach Bixler and Joe Panzeri. Prugh is ranked 32nd in the latest Golfweek individual standings while Olson is 38th.

The tournament is the Huskies second of the season. Washington placed third at its own Opus NW Invitational at Gold Mountain. Washington placed third at the event behind USC and BYU. Prugh led Washington with a third-place finish, his best as a collegiate. Olson was sixth, Lepp placed 14th and Panzeri was 20th. Bixler did not play at the NW Invitational. He was one of three players who competed at Idaho's Vandal Classic. Bixler tied for 12th at the tournament that marked his collegiate debut. Bixler lead the team with a 70.67 stroke average.
