Bruin Cross Country Heads to Indiana for NCAA Pre-National Invitational

Oct. 12, 2004

Eric Peterson's women and men's cross country teams will head to Terre Haute, IN Saturday, Oct. 16, for the NCAA Pre-National Meet at Indiana State University, which is the site of the 2004 NCAA Cross Country Championships.

'For our two squads neither team to date has done enough in head-to-head competition to be considered a legitimate at-large team for NCAA Championship Team Selection,' said Peterson.

'Our goals this weekend are two-fold: Running well against those teams we will battle in our region (such as Stanford, Arizona State and UCSB on the women's side, and ASU, Oregon and Cal Poly-SLO on the men's side) and defeating as many nationally top-ranked teams as possible.'

'The strength of our front runners (Jenna Timinsky, Alison Costello, Ashley Caldwell, Jon Rankin, Erik Emilsson, and Auston Ramos) along with a great effort by the is what we will need to meet these goals.'

Women's Team
The women's races will feature 15 of the top-30 ranked teams in the country, including No. 1 Stanford and No. 3 Michigan. The Bruin women, ranked No. 25 in the nation, finished fifth in their race at last year's Pre-National Meet. Sophomore Alison Costello, the Bruin's No. 1 runner all season, will lead the Bruins into Indiana. Costello finished sixth at both the USF Invite (17:26.5) and Stanford Invite (14:01), and was 25th at the Notre Dame Invite (17:28). Junior Jenna Timinsky, the Bruins' No. 2 runner, will also head to Indiana. Timinsky was 10th at both the USF Invite (17:52.3) and Stanford Invite (14:11), and was 50th at Notre Dame (17:47).

Also heading to Indiana this weekend with Costello and Timinsky are senior Carmen Winant; junior Allison Hall, sophomore Ashley Caldwell and freshmen Olga Aulet-Leon and Monica Rothenburger.

Men's Team
The men's races will feature 24 of the top-30 teams in the country, including No. 2 Stanford, No. 4 Iona, and No. 5 Michigan. Last season the UCLA men finished 17th at the Pre-National Meet in their race. The Bruin men are led by seniors Jon Rankin and Eric Emilsson. Rankin has been the Bruins' No. 1 runner in three meets this season, with a seventh place finish at USF (24:11.6), a third-place finish at Stanford (12:02), and a 22nd-place-finish at Notre Dame (24:12). Emilsson was the No. 2 runner for UCLA at Stanford (10th, 12:12) and Notre Dame (24:36, 46th).

Also competing for the Bruin men this weekend are sophomores Austin Ramos and Mickey Cobrin, and freshman Kyle Shackleton. The final two spots will go to two of these three runners - Senior Ben Aragon, junior Nick De Felice, or freshman Mike Haddan.
