Women's Hoops Picked to Finish Fourth in the Pac-10 Coaches Poll

Oct. 15, 2004

TEMPE, Ariz. - The Arizona State women's basketball team has been picked to finish fourth in the preseason poll of the Pac-10 Conference women's basketball coaches released Friday.

Arizona State received 50 points to rank fourth in the poll, marking the fourth time in the last five years that the Sun Devils have been picked to finish in the upper half of the Pac-10 by the league's coaches. ASU was picked to finish fifth last season, sixth in 2002-03, fourth in 2001-02 and fifth in 2000-01.

The Sun Devils return 11 letterwinners, including all five starters, from last year's 17-12 squad and look to extend a streak that has seen the team advance to the postseason for a school-record five consecutive seasons. This year's ASU roster features four seniors, including guards Betsy Boardman, Lauren Stagg, Carrie Bucker and Kylan Loney. Loney was a first-team All-Pac-10 selection last season after leading the team in assists and three-point shooting. The Sun Devils also return a talented group of four juniors and three sophomores who have made significant contributions in the last two years, including honorable-mention All-Pac-10 selection Kristen Kovesdy and Pac-10 All-Freshman honoree Emily Westerberg.

Stanford has been chosen by the coaches as the favorite to win the 2004-05 Pac-10 title with eight first-place votes. Arizona and UCLA each earned one first-place vote and were tabbed second and third in the poll, respectively. It marks the fifth year in a row that Stanford has been favored by the coaches to win the conference title since the poll's inception in 1998-99.

Arizona State opens the 2004-05 season with exhibition games on Nov. 3 and 8 at Wells Fargo Arena. The Sun Devils begin the regular season on the road, traveling to Baton Rouge, La., for the Women's Sports Foundation Classic on Nov. 11-12. ASU will take on Virginia in the first round and LSU or Maine in the second round.

The Sun Devils will play host to San Diego on Saturday, Nov. 20 at 6:30 p.m. at Wells Fargo Arena in their home opener.
