OSU Slips At Stanford Invitational

Oct. 16, 2004

STANFORD, Calif.- -

Tough pin positions and poor putting caused the Oregon State women's golf team to drop to 18th place Saturday in the second round of the Stanford Pepsi Invitational at the par-70 Stanford Golf Course. The Beavers have a two-round total of 611 with one round to play.

'We didn't putt very well today,' said OSU head coach Risë Lakowske, 'and we had a tough time adjusting to the windy conditions.'

Sophomore Jill Ferrante and freshman Julie Uhrik are tied for 46th and lead the Beavers with totals of 150.

Arizona State kept the overall lead by firing a 2-over 282. The Sun Devils lead Pepperdine by a substantial 11 strokes heading into the final round.

Washington State's Anastasia Kostina used her second consecutive 68 to take the individual lead and holds a one stroke advantage over Arizona State's Louise Stahle and Arizona's Cassandra Kirkland.

Freshman Jessi Gebhardt followed her opening-round 75 with a 79 Saturday and is tied for 63rd with one round to play.

Junior Leah Whiting has a total of 158 and sophomore Lindsay Eide is at 165.

'The biggest factor so far has been experience,' added Lakowske.

'Our freshmen did a good job today, but our team as a whole has not played this course very many times, which has hurt us.

'The girls are disappointed, but they have good attitudes and are dedicated to getting better.'

The final round begins Sunday morning at 8:00 a.m.
