No. 12 Husky Men Blank Oregon State 2-0
Oct. 17, 2004
SEATTLE, Wash. - Washington's 12th-ranked men's soccer team used goals from senior Casey Armstrong and sophomore Kevin Forrest to shut down Northwest rival Oregon State, 2-0, in Pac-10 action at Husky Soccer Field, Sunday afternoon. The win secures the Huskies' first-place standing in the conference, as UW remains unbeaten against Pac-10 opponents at 3-0-1, and improves to 10-3-2 overall.
The Beavers, who dropped to 5-8-1 overall and 0-4-0 in the Pac-10, were challenged early and often by a Husky offense that tallied 23 shots. Armstrong put Washington on the board at 14:27, after receiving a through ball from junior Jeff Hoover and nailing a 10-yard shot past OSU goalkeeper Jason Mariner.
It was Washington's leading scorer, Forrest, who gave the Huskies a two-goal cushion scoring his sixth goal of the year at 58:51. Senior All-American C.J. Klaas put the play into motion with a cross from the right side to Armstrong whose shot was deflected by Mariner. Forrest was quick to pick up the rebound and sent the ball past Mariner from five yards out.
The Beaver defense staved off many more scoring attempts from Washington, with freshman Ely Allen and senior Joe Birklid coming up with chances late in the game. Birklid sent a rocket just wide of the goal, and Allen had a shot saved by an OSU defender right on the goal line. All but two players in the Husky starting lineup took a shot, with Forrest leading the attack with five.
Washington junior goalkeeper Chris Eylander made one save on nine shots from Oregon State, to earn his ninth shutout of the season. Eylander's performance tied former UW standout Bill May for third on the Husky season-list for shutouts. Mariner recorded seven saves for Oregon State, and seven different Beavers accounted for nine shots.
UW snapped its Sunday jinx at home, picking up its first Sunday afternoon win of the season at Husky Soccer Field. Until today, UW had battled to two double overtime draws and suffered one loss when playing at home on Sunday.
Now halfway through Pac-10 play and sitting in first place, the Huskies will have a much deserved bye week, before hitting the road to face Stanford on Friday, Oct. 29, and California, Sunday, Oct. 31.
