Washington State Completes L.A. Sweep With 2-0 Win Over USC

Oct. 17, 2004

PULLMAN, Wash. -- The Washington State soccer team (7-5-2, 2-2-0 Pac-10) upset No. 22 USC (8-5-1, 2-2-0 Pac-10) 2-0 at Lower Soccer Field in a Pacific-10 Conference match Sunday. Haley Thompson-Miller scored the game winner at the 11:52 mark to give WSU its third win in the series against the Trojans. The victory, combined with the Cougars' 1-0 defeat of No. 8 UCLA Friday, marks the first time in the history of the program that WSU has beaten both Southern California teams in the same season.

Thompson-Miller scored the game-winning goal 12 minutes into the match from the left-corner of the USC eight-yard box. The junior forward ran onto a pass played by freshman Shaye Harrel behind the Trojan defense and hit a first-time shot past USC goalkeeper Veronica Simonton to take a 1-0 lead.

The Cougars entered halftime with a one goal lead despite trailing USC in shots 4-3 and corner kick opportunities 2-1. WSU forced Simonton to make two of her six saves in the first period while Cougar goalkeeper Katie Hultin did not record a save in the first half.

Carmen Anderson scored her first goal of the season at the 56:17 mark to give the Cougars the two goal cushion. The junior, who returned to action this weekend after missing part of the season due to knee surgery, out ran a Trojan defender and slid to poke the ball past the charging USC goalkeeper.

The Cougars held strong in the second half, fending off 12 USC shots and six corner kick opportunities. Hultin recorded all five of her saves in the second period, recording her sixth shutout of the season and the first WSU shutout over the Trojans since 1998.

USC will host California and Stanford next weekend at McAlister Field.
