USC Upsets No. 15 Cal, 2-1, In Overtime
Oct. 22, 2004
LOS ANGELES -- Junior defender Jocelyn Leche (Pinole/Salesian HS) slid a shot from 25 yards out past goalkeeper Anna Key as the USC Trojans upset the No. 15 California Golden Bears, 2-1, for a Pac-10 Conference overtime win at McAlister Field. Leche scored with 29 seconds remaining in the first overtime period.
Senior goalkeeper Julie Peterson (Mission Viejo/Santa Margarita HS) recorded six saves for the Women of Troy in her first start in over a month (Sept. 12 vs. Tennessee). Peterson's best save came in the 88th minute off a shot from Laurie Gartrell, which was headed for the upper right corner.
USC snaps a two-game losing streak and improves to 9-5-1 overall, 3-2 in Pac-10 play. Cal falls to 8-4-2 on the season and 1-2-1 in conference. This was the fourth time in the last six meetings between the two schools that the game has been decided in overtime. The Women of Troy have now won three straight meetings against the Golden Bears.
Senior midfielder Ashley Casas put the Women of Troy ahead in the 21st minute with a run inside the penalty box and knocking a shot off the crossbar. Caroline Lea tied the match in the 41st minute, tucking a shot underneath Peterson up front off an assist from Katie Ratican.
Cal outshot USC by a 14-10 margin, but the Trojans controlled the tempo in the first overtime. Leche collected a deflected header from a Cal defender and fired a line drive into the right side of the net for the game-winner. It was Leche's second career game-winning goal.
The Women of Troy hosts No. 14 Stanford on Sunday (Oct. 24) in a 1 p.m. match at McAlister Field.
