No. 11 Stanford Sweeps WSU Volleyball
Oct. 23, 2004
PULLMAN, Wash. -- The Stanford Cardinal volleyball team, ranked 11th nationally, defeated Washington State University 30-17, 30-19, 30-19, Friday night at Bohler Gym.
Stanford's record in now 15-4 overall, 7-1 in Pac-10 while the Cougars fall to 3-18 overall, 0-8 in conference action.
'The team talked a lot about effort, mindset, making errors, mental determination, and playing without a sense of urgency,' WSU Head Coach Brian Heffernan said. 'I let each one of them stand up and be the coach after the match tonight and give their evaluation of the match and those were the types of things that they were sharing.'
Stanford's Ogonna Nnamani led all players with 14 kills and hit .400. Kristin Richards added 11 kills and Courtney Schultz had the match-high 15 digs. Setter Bryn Kehoe had 36 assists and 12 digs. Both Jennifer Hucke and Liz Suiter had five blocks.
WSU was led by the nine kills from Jennifer Todd who also had two aces and four blocks. Nicole Martin had 19 assists and Stacey Holbrook had a team-high 10 digs. Alison Billingsley contributed a pair of aces.
'Stacey Holbrook's 10 digs tonight is the biggest statistic,' Heffernan said. 'I think she passed the ball pretty well after game one. Stacey did a nice job and was very, very consistent out there.'
The Cardinal hit .314 for the match and held the Cougars to .026.
In each of the three games, WSU held off Stanford at game point, including scoring four points with the Cardinal at 29 in the second game.
'I think that at the end of each game there were stretches where we made a run of points,' Heffernan said. 'They were on 29 then we had a sense of urgency or were able to execute on our side of the net, and serve aggressively and create some issues for Stanford.'
Washington State hosts No. 13 California (10-7, 5-3) Saturday night at Bohler Gym. The Golden Bears lost at No. 1 Washington Friday night, 30-22, 31-29, 30-20.
