Washington State Concludes Tough Day Two

STANFORD, Calif. - The three Cougar singles competitors who advanced to the round of 32 were all defeated by their seeded opponents during day two of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional Saturday. Senior Orsolya Sallai recorded the lone singles victory on the day for the Cougars.

Sallai knocked off Joanna Laranjinha of San Francisco in consolation singles by a score of 6-1, 6-4. Sallai will aim for her fifth win on the season when she faces Amanda Wise of UC-Davis tomorrow.

Senior Nora Gaal suffered only her third loss of the season by falling to Stanford's No. 6 seed Theresa Logar in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. Senior Chris Martinez lost to No. 5 seed Margrita Karnaukva of Sacramento State, 6-0, 6-1 which is only her second defeat this season.

The No. 11 seed Anne Yelsey of Stanford put down Cougar sophomore Amy Toth by a score of 6-1, 6-0.

The Cougar pair of Martinez/Sallai will compete in doubles against the No. 1 seed of the tournament, and No. 13-ranked in the country, Alice Barnes/Erin Burdette of Stanford. Last season the Cougar duo fell to Barnes/Burdette by a score of 8-6. The match is set to begin at 9 a.m. Sunday.

'We're excited to have Chris and Orsolya representing the Cougars in the quarterfinals,' WSU Assistant Coach Krissy Stubbs said.
