Sumantri, Hadzic Cruise At ITA Northwest Regional
Oct. 24, 2004
PALO ALTO, Calif. - Rain wreaked havoc with the scheduling today at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships on the Stanford campus, but could not prevent Washington's top two singles players from easily advancing into the Round of 16. Senior Dea Sumantri and junior Dinka Hadzic each have yet to drop a set as they seek to qualify for the ITA National Indoor Championships by reaching the final of the regional.
In three matches thus far, Hadzic has only lost eight total games. Seeded 16th, Hadzic eliminated Oregon's Monica Hoz de Vila, 6-1, 6-1. A difficult test awaits in the Round of 16 as Hadzic will play fourth-seeded Erin Burdette of Stanford.
Sumantri, the tournament's third seed, routed Janalle Kaloi of Santa Clara, 6-0, 6-1. The two-time All-American goes against Fresno State's Kathrin Winterhalter for a spot in the quarterfinals.
Washington's other third round participant, freshman Allison Rainey, had her tournament ended today by Lucia Tallo of Fresno State. Tallo took the first set, 6-3, but Rainey managed to take the second set off the 13th seed, 6-3. Tallo captured the third, however, by another 6-3 margin.
In doubles play, Hadzic and Sumantri moved into the quarterfinals with an easy 8-1 win over an Idaho duo. Sophomore Saskia Nauenberg and freshman Tara Simpson were eliminated however by the third-seeds, Daria Panova and Dominika Dieskova of Oregon.
An additional round of singles play was to take place this evening but wet weather caused delays. Round of 16 matches may have been played late tonight but results will likely be unavailable until tomorrow.
The ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, the nation's premier collegiate indoor tennis tournament, is the second of three national championship events for college tennis this season. The first event - the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships - was held earlier this month, and the third event is the season-ending NCAA Championships in May. The ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships feature a 32-player singles field and 16-team doubles field.
The tournament continues through the weekend with finals in singles and doubles taking place Monday, Oct. 25.
