Sumantri Out In Semis At ITA NW Championships

Oct. 25, 2004

PALO ALTO, Calif. - Senior Dea Sumantri was overpowered today in the semifinals of the ITA Northwest Regional Championships by top-seeded Alice Barnes of Stanford at the Taube Tennis Stadium. The loss brings the tournament to a close for Washington and leaves Sumantri and other Huskies needing at-large bids to enter the ITA National Indoor Championships starting Nov. 4.

Sumantri, the tournament's third seed, had won four matches without dropping a set to reach the semifinals but Barnes, ranked No. 6 nationally, was too tough and surrendered only one game in a 6-1, 6-0 victory. Barnes advanced to Thursday's final against California's Suzi Babos, a freshman seeded eighth.

Both singles finalists automatically qualify for the second national championship of the season, the ITA National Indoor Championships. The doubles champions also advance and Barnes put that one on her resume as well, winning the final today with her partner Erin Burdette.
