Sumantri In Semis At ITA Regional Championships

PALO ALTO, Calif. - Washington's top women's tennis player, Dea Sumantri, advanced to the semifinals of the ITA Northwest Regional Championships on Sunday with a pair of victories at the Taube Tennis Stadium. Sumantri's semifinal match is scheduled for noon today and with a win the senior will qualify for the ITA National Indoor Championships held Nov. 4-7 at the University of Michigan.
In her first match of the day, Sumantri, the tournament's third seed, defeated Katharina Winterhalter of Fresno State, 6-4,6-2 to advance to the quarterfinals. There, Sumantri faced the ninth seed, Sasha Podkolzina of Cal, but handily defeated the nation's 30th-ranked player in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. In today's semifinal, Sumantri will have to knock off the tournament's top seed, sixth-ranked Alice Barnes of Stanford.
Junior Dinka Hadzic had dropped only eight games in three matches heading in to the Round of 16, but lost to fourth-seeded Erin Burdette of Stanford. As a doubles team, Sumantri and Hadzic were eliminated in the quarterfinals, 8-6, by Nicole Shabaz and Samantha Waller of Cal Poly.
Singles and doubles semifinals and finals will all be played today. The singles finalists and the doubles champion automatically qualify for the ITA National Indoor Championships, the second of three national championships in collegiate tennis.
