Connelly Leads Huskies With Third-Place Finish at Jim Danner Invite

Oct. 26, 2004

PORTLAND, Ore. - Husky senior Camille Connelly earned a career-best third-place finish Saturday at the Jim Danner Invitational at Portland's Blue Lake Park, leading five UW women across the line in the first 40 finishers. Connelly's finish was the highest by any Husky woman in 2004; the previous best was a fourth-place finish by Lindsey Egerdahl at the Willamette Invitational.

The Husky senior from Marysville, Wash., crossed the 5,000-meter course in just 18 minutes, nine seconds, just nine seconds off the winning pace set by unattached competitor Lorilynn Bloomer. With many of Washington's veteran runners competing Saturday at the Pre-National Meet in Terre Haute, Ind., the contingent Connelly led in Portland was comprised of just five athletes, with Washington not competing as a scoring team. Junior Laura Hodgson clocked her fastest 5,000-meter effort of the year with a time of 19:03, good for 18th,, while redshirt freshman Kelsey McCallum was the third Husky across the line, taking 24th in 19:11. Junior Karen Schwager (25th, 19:13) and freshman Olivia Garrow (39th, 19:45), rounded out the UW finishers. All but Connelly competed unattached.

Washington's 28th- ranked men's squad was also represented Saturday, with freshmen Austin Abbott and Tom Peterson each competing unattached in the 6,436-meter men's open race. Abbott's 15th-place finish, in 20:31, marked his unofficial collegiate debut, while Peterson placed 31st with a time of 21:01. Neither could keep up with Portland's Brendan Robinson, who paced the field in 20:01.

The Huskies' Jim Danner contingent will rejoin their Pre-National Meet teammates next week to prepare for the upcoming Pac-10 Championships, Oct. 30 in Berkeley, Calif.
