Women's Volleyball Falls to Waves in Five Games

LOS ANGELES - The 11th-ranked UCLA women's volleyball team lost a five-game match to Pepperdine on Tuesday night in Pauley Pavilion. Game scores were 24-30, 28-30, 30-24, 33-31, 15-11. UCLA falls to 13-6 with the loss while Pepperdine improves to 6-11. UCLA had three players with double-figure kills, led by Colby Lyman with 18 and Nana Meriwether with 17.

UCLA sprinted to a 20-13 lead in the opening game of the match and was able to close out a 30-24 opening game win, despite hitting just .178 to Pepperdine's .125 in the game. In game two, a late charge by the Waves tied the score at 25-25 and extended a before the Bruins scored four of the next five points then trading points to win the game 30-28.

At the break between games two and three, the Bruins had a balanced attack from its starting six, but neither team was hitting particularly accurately as UCLA was hitting .165 to Pepperdine's .107. At that point, UCLa was out-blocking the Waves 7.5-5.0 and held narrow leads in kills (32-30) and digs (44-43).

Game three was tight early, and was tied as late as 18-18. Pepperdine then extended a 24-21 lead before a UCLA timeout resulted in kills from Becky Green and Nana Meriwether to bring th eBruins within one point at 24-23. A Kristin McClune kill was followed by two Bruin attack errors, a UCLA ball handling error and a Kristen Shultz kill to give the Waves a 29-23 lead, and Pepperdine closed out the 30-24 win with a Sophia Milo kill.

In game four, Pepperdine was able to pull away from UCLA after a 17-17 tie, and the game looked to be going Pepperdine's way before a Becky Green kill make the score 28-24 Pepperdine and sparked a Bruin rally. After a block by Nana Meriwether and Katie Karter continued the rally, the Waves called a timeout, but UCLA kept the momentum going, using kills from Green and Carter to pull within ont oint before a Katy Daly kill brought Pepperdine to game point. A Becky Green kill again brough the Bruisn to within one, and a Nana Meriwether kill tied the game before an attack error by Milo gave the Bruins their first match point at 30-29.

After a Pepperdine timeout, the Waves responded with a block and a Lecca Roberts kill to reach a game point of their own, but Nana Meriwether re-tied the score at 31-31 before two kills from Roberts sent the match to a decisive fifth game.

Pepperdine sprinted out to a 3-0 lead in game five, capitalizing on two Bruin attack errors to end the first two rallies. UCLA was able to tie the match at 6-6, but the Bruins were unable to take the lead as Pepperdine went on to win the fifth game 15-11.

Five Bruins finished with double-figure points, led by Meriwether with 21.5 (17 kills, 1 solo block, 7 block assists), Colby Lyman with 20 (18 K, 4 BA), Brynn Murphy with 15.5 (13 K, 1 ace, 3 BA), Katie Carter with 12 (6 K, career-high 4 aces, 4 BA) and Brittany Ringel with 10 (8 K, 1 ace, 2 BA).

UCLA returns to action on Friday evening with a 7 pm match against Arizona State, followed by a 7 pm Saturday match against Arizona.
