Cougars Defeat Oregon 3-2
Oct. 28, 2004
EUGENE, Ore. -- The Washington State University volleyball team stopped a 13-match losing streak Thursday night with a 3-2 win over the Oregon Ducks at McArthur Court. The game scores were WSU 26-30, 30-28, 25-30, 30-25, 15-6.
The win also marked the first Pac-10 Conference victory for WSU's first-year head coach Brian Heffernan. WSU is now 4-19 overall, 1-9 in conference contests. Oregon, which earlier this month snapped a 26-match Pac-10 losing streak, is now 9-11 overall, 1-9 in Pac-10 action and has not won a conference match at home in 40 matches - since Nov. 9, 2000.
Cougars Kelly Rosin, Jen Barcus and Liz Spear combined for 43 kills. Spear led the match with a career-high nine blocks as the Cougars out-blocked the Ducks 14 to 5. Five WSU players had double-figure digs with Stacey Holbrook leading at 27 digs while Alison Billingsley added a career-high 20 digs. Nicole Martin had 59 assists.
The Ducks' Kelly Russell and Allyson Leavitt combined for 49 kills and 50 digs. Katie O'Neil led all players with 41 digs while Stephanie Alleman added four service aces. Heather Madison had 59 assists.
Both teams played without a starter as WSU sophomore middle blocker Jennifer Todd was in Las Vegas attending a family member's funeral and Oregon sophomore outside hitter Sarah Mason sat out with a sprained ankle. Both teams broke the triple-digit digs mark with WSU going 106 and Oregon digging up 123.
'The biggest thing tonight was our passing game was great with Kelly Rosin and Stacey Holbrook and Alison Billingsley leading the way for the whole team,' Heffernan said. 'We served a lot of short balls and just made their offense very off-balanced and that allowed us to play defense around it.
WSU travels to Corvallis for a 7 p.m. match against Oregon State.
