No. 18 California Defeats Oregon State, 2-1

Oct. 29, 2004

BERKELEY - The No. 18 Golden Bears recorded their tenth victory of the season in a 2-1 win against visiting Pac-10 opponent Oregon State. The win improves the Bears' record to 10-3-2, 2-3-1 Pac-10, while the Beavers drop to 5-9-1, 0-5-0 Pac-10.

Cal got onto the scoreboard quickly, striking within the first five minutes of the match. Junior midfielder Nick Hatzke drove in a free kick to junior forward Calen Carr. Carr notched his fourth goal of the season and Cal's first in the game on a 6-yard header.

The Bears added a second goal in the second half off of the foot of sophomore midfielder Eric Ebert. Cal once again took advantage of a dead-ball opportunity, when awarded a free kick just outside the 18-yard-box. Hatzke sent in another cross, which was redirected by junior midfield Angel Quintero before Ebert buried the shot.

The Bears made the most of the scoring opportunities they had throughout the game; their two shots on frame both found their way to the back of the net. Cal was outshot by Oregon State, 8-6.

While the match was a physical one, the two teams combining for 28 fouls and two yellow cards, it was an improvement on their Oct. 10 meeting, when 39 fouls (30-OSU, 9-Cal) were called and 10 cards (eight-OSU, two-Cal) were awarded.

The Bears remain at home this weekend, looking to avenge an Oct. 8 3-0 loss to the No. 4 Washington Huskies. Game time is set for 2:30 p.m. at Edwards Stadium.
