Oct. 29, 2004

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Husky women's tennis senior Dea Sumantri will be among the nation's most selective field next week to compete for the ITA National Indoor Championships at the University of Michigan. The singles and doubles fields for the Nov. 4-7 tournament were announced today by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).

The 2004 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, the nation's premier collegiate indoor tennis tournaments for Division I, will be hosted by Michigan at its Varsity Tennis Center for the second straight year. The event features a 32-player singles field and 16-team doubles field, including: champions from ITA Regional Championships held across the country during the past two weeks, the ITA National Small College champions, the champions of ITA All-American Championships and at-large and wild card selections made last week by the ITA National Tournament Committee. Overall, more than 7,000 players from nearly 600 schools participate annually in the ITA Regional and National Intercollegiate Championships, vying for a spot in this elite field.

Sumantri, No. 11 in the year's first ITA Rankings, will be making her first appearance at the championships. A three-time All-American, she has put together a 5-2 mark in the fall season thus far after reaching the Round of 16 at the All-American Championships and the semifinals of the ITA Northwest Regional Championships earlier this month.

The ITA National Indoor Championships are the second of three national championships for the collegiate tennis season. The first were the ITA All-American Championships and the third will be the season-ending NCAA Championships in May.
