Beavers Finish Tenth At Pac-10 Championships

Oct. 30, 2004

San Francisco, Calif. - Oregon State placed tenth out of ten teams at the Pacific-10 Championships. Sophomore Ashley Younce led the way for the Beavers coming in 31st in the 92-runner field Saturday morning.

Stanford won the 6,000 meter race for the ninth consecutive time with 30 points, and Arizona State was second with 47 points. Arizona State's Amy Hastings was the top individual runner, finishing with a time of 20:19.

Younce finished in a time of 22 minutes and 2 seconds. Another top finisher for the Beavers was sophomore Neoma Palmer who finished 36th in 22 minutes and 17 seconds.

'Overall I'm pleased with the girls,' head coach Kelly Sullivan said. 'We went into the season projected to be tenth and in most cases not even a close tenth place. But to be able to walk away from the meet knowing that we could have been eighth is good and positive for the team and the future.'

Oregon State just missed ninth place by one point and eighth place by five points.

'We're just looking forward to regionals in two weeks and see if we can step it up even more,' Sullivan said. 'Probably the big thing to mention is we're a program that's only been together for eight weeks and for us to be that competitive compared to others that have been doing it forever; we're excited about that.'

Oregon State's next race is Saturday, Nov. 13th at the NCAA West Regional in Fresno, Calif. The starting time is set for 11 a.m.
