USC Falls 3-0 At Arizona

Oct. 30, 2004

TUCSON, Ariz. - Candice Wilks scored twice Friday as the Arizona Wildcats defeated the USC Trojans, 3-0, in Pac-10 Conference action at Murphey Stadium. Wilks scored her first goal on a penalty kick in the first half shortly after an apparent USC goal was disallowed after a late offsides call.

Arizona improved to 13-4 on the season and 4-2 in Pac-10 play while USC falls to 9-7-1 overall and 4-3-1 in conference action.

In the 34th minute, several Arizona players looked to be offsides, but no call was made as Wilks was awarded a penalty kick after being taken down on the breakaway by USC goalkeeper Julie Peterson. The controversy nullified an otherwise strong effort by the Women of Troy.

'It's a shame that the spirit of the game was affected in such a manner tonight,' said USC head coach Jim Millinder.

Vanesha Bailey scored her second goal of the season in the 62nd minute for the Wildcats, followed three minutes later by Wilks' second goal of the game and her sixth of the season.

Arizona goalie McCall Smith made six saves to record the shutout.

USC travels to Arizona State on Sunday (Oct. 31) for a noon match.
