No. 18 California Defeats No. 5 Washington, 1-0 in Double Overtime

BERKELEY - No. 18 California ended No. 5 Washington's Pac-10 unbeaten streak, beating the Huskies 1-0 in double overtime at Berkeley's Edwards Stadium. The Golden Bears' record improves to 11-3-2, 3-3-1 Pac-10, while Washington falls to 11-4-2, 4-1-1 Pac-10.

Junior forward Calen Carr (5 goals, 3 assists) buried a loose ball in the back of the net in the 107th minute of play to give Cal the victory. Junior midfielder Nick Hatzke (5 goals, 7 assists) assisted on the play. The score capped off a terrific weekend for the two, who combined for a goal against Oregon State on Friday's game. The assist was Hatzke's third in his last two games.

Cal controlled the scoreless first-half of play, creating numerous offensive opportunities. Cal's best chance in the half came at the eight minute mark, when Carr saw his 8-yard header cleared off the goal line by a Washington defender.

Washington began to gain some momentum towards the end of the second-half, but Cal's defense was up to the challenge, keeping Washington off the scoreboard.

Washington's junior midfielder Jeff Hoover broke away from the Cal defense in the 97th minute, but Cal keeper Eric Kronberg came off his line to preserve the shutout. Kronberg finished with 5 saves, as did Washington's Chris Eyelander.

Cal out-shot the Huskies 14-8, with each team tallying three shots in overtime.

The Bears next face non-conference opponent Portland on Friday, November 5 in Berkeley at 2 p.m.
