Red Outbattles White at Intrasquad Duals

Nov. 4, 2004

Stanford, Calif. - The Stanford wrestling program got its season underway tonight in Burnham Pavilion, holding its annual intrasquad dual meet. While no match tonight solidified a starting spot for any squad member, it gave the coaching staff some useful tools in helping to piece together the starting ten. The team stayed injury free and saw a lot of wrestling to get excited about.

True freshmen Jared Boyer (Oklahoma City, OK) and Bobby Pease (Los, Gatos) 'took one' for the team by wrestling twice on the evening to provide team members with ample competition. Pleasant surprises in the dual meet came in numerous spots. True freshman Rafael Chavez (Rock Springs, WY) defeated returning letter winner Juston Johnson by a 6-1 margin. Chavez demonstrated the toughness that won him three state titles in Wyoming. Redshirt freshman Josh Zupancic put on a takedown clinic defeating opponent Zack Hensley by a 12-5 margin. Zupancic was a four-time state finalist in Ohio, and is looking to see his first varsity action this season. Zupancic's classmate Scott Loescher also looked sharp in his 12-5 defeat of returning starter and Pac-10 placewinner Brian Perry. Loescher put together a series of slick takedowns to secure his 12-5 victory.

Stanford kicks off its season on November 14, taking a partial squad to the Central Missouri Open. The Cardinal then sees its first dual meet action the following Friday, November 19 at Cal State Fullerton.
