Stanford Gymnastics Halloween Event a Success

Nov. 4, 2004

Halloween festivities came twice this year for the Stanford Women's Gymnastics team as they presented their first annual Halloween 'Meet the Team'. On Saturday, October 30th, the Ford Center was the place to be for Bay Area gymnastics fans. 160 people showed up for the event, including 105 costumed youngsters. Fans were treated to an exciting exhibition by the 2005 team followed by a brief question and answer session. The team demonstrated some highflying skills on the uneven bars, balance beam and tumble trak. They also discussed their dedication to their team and their hopes for the upcoming season. It was a unique opportunity for fans to have personal interaction with the student-athletes and appreciate their gymnastics ability in an informal setting.

Following the team's performance and Q& A session it was time for the kids to take over the gym! Rotations were set up throughout Stanford Gymnastics' newly remodeled facility for the children to experience. Surely enough, the trampoline and the pit were the group favorites! Concluding the evening each group had a short costume parade followed by their group cheer. The 'Spiders' cheer was complete with scary faces while the 'Spook-aharas' went with an innovative stomp routine. Creativity and energy filled the gym and Halloween was officially a success before the trick-or-treating began.

Head coach Kristen Smyth summed up the evening saying, 'Our student-athletes are incredibly accomplished in the gym as well as in the classroom and they are truly exceptional role models for young gymnasts. It was great to see the children responding to them and having fun in the gym.'
